Backpack couldn't come at a better time for me. It seems that I have more information I need to organize and store everyday. Things to do now, things to do later, things to buy, etc. I love to make lists but until now, those lists have lived inside my head. Not very high-tech!
Right now, I'm just gettng the hang of it. I have a list of books I've read recently and ideas for buying an Apple computer inexpensively. I've even created a Link TypeList to keep track of the lists that I've made public. I was inspired by Deb's humbling wedding planning list, which makes me want to take a nap in her honor.
There are two things I really like:
1. It's web-based, which is also why I like gmail. This isn't my computer so I try not to install and store too much on here (aside from mp3s, of course). Anytime I can do something online rather than with an installed program, it's a good thing. At some point, I'm either going to buy a laptop or at least start using my computer, so it'll be nice to have information readily available from any computer.
2. It's really, really easy to use. The interface is uncluttered and the features are intuitive. The service itself is nice and simple, so there's no digging through page after page to figure out how to do something. It's right under your nose. Of course, they have a weblog that's full of tips and tricks.
I've come up with a clever way to use TypePad with it! For my books page, I wanted to create links to Amazon, for easy reference. I hate generating those links through the Amazon Associates thing. So, I created a "Books" TypeList, displayed it on this blog that I use for testing stuff, and now I can just use "Copy link location" in FireFox to grab the URL. I am SO CLEVER.
The free service allows you to create five pages, so I'll probably have to move up to Basic or Plus soon. I had been storing bits of info in Notepad docs on my desktop but this is way better, obviously. I just have one thought - why didn't someone think of this sooner?
Wow. I didn't realize that you could post images from the web without an upgraded membership. I went for the lowly $5 a month, because without pretty pictures to help me through, the wedding to-do list was depressing. I mean, the guys totally deserve the money, I should just RTFM once in a while before busting out my credit card. :)
(As for the Mac, I feel a conversion brewing inside this old PC-gal, too.)
